UofT PA Program At-a-Glance

Admission Requirements

Status

Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status required.

Undergraduate Study

Minimum 10 full-year courses (20 half-year courses) or the equivalent of 4 semesters of undergraduate university education from a recognized university.

Cumulative GPA (cGPA)

Minimum GPA of 3.0 calculated on the OMSAS scale.

cGPA Calculation

All completed undergraduate studies will be considered in the calculation of the GPA.

Coursework

None required.

Previous Experience

Minimum of 350 hours of health care experience. All forms of health care experiences are considered toward the minimum requirement and can be obtained through employment, clinical placements as part of health care educational programs, or as a volunteer.

Preferred Admission Criteria

• One full course equivalent (one full-year course, or two-semester courses) of Human Anatomy & Physiology
• Recent health care experience (within the last 5 years))
• Direct hands-on patient care experience in a clinical setting
• Paid positions as a health care provider
• Current Ontario resident
• Have been a resident, as an adult, in a northern or rural community. (For Ontario, "rural" = Rurality index of 40 or more; outside of Ontario, "rural" = population of <15,000)

About the Program

UofT BScPA Program Details

Mission Statement

To deliver Physician Assistant education programs built on a foundation of social accountability, particularly to rural, remote and underserved communities.

Accreditation

Accredited by EQual Accreditation Canada in 2023.

Program Structure

The BScPA is a University of Toronto degree delivered in collaboration with NOSM University and The Michener Institute of Education at UHN. The three institutions have formed the Consortium of PA Education to collaboratively contribute in the development, administration and delivery of the UofT degree.

Curriculum

Year 1: Pre-Clerkship

• Completion of 15 courses in total online with synchronous and asynchronous learning and online proctoring of assessments
• 2 Mandatory In-Person Campus Blocks will occur: a 3 week block in September, and a 7 day block in June.

Year 2: Clerkship

• Rotations: 12 weeks of Primary Care, plus 4 week core rotations in General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Hospitalist/Internal Medicine, Mental Health and Paediatrics. The remaining weeks are spent in electives.
• alf of the clinical practicum will be assigned in Southern Ontario, half in Northern Ontario.
• Mandatory In-Person Campus Block in Toronto will also occur - 1 week in March.

Clinical Placement Locations

All core rotations are completed in Ontario, set in pre-determined Northern & Southern hubs in Ontario. View map of clinical sites
