Manitoba was Canada’s first graduate-level PA program, Master of Physician Assistant Studies (M.P.A.S.) degree is a nationally accredited coursework-based graduate program, designed to educate generalist medical providers who are eligible for the national certification exam and qualify for PA licensure in Manitoba.

Manitoba MPAS Program Details

Mission Statement

To train outstanding physician assistant clinicians as generalist medical providers to serve communities in Manitoba and across Canada. Through leading the field in academic preparation of physician assistants, we nurture future leaders in the profession, meeting the needs of students, patients, the public, government and employers. We are proud to teach reflective medicine that considers the full patient narrative, always seeking to improve access to high-quality medical care by placing the patient first.

Curriculum

Follows a "spiral curriculum," which repeatedly introduces foundational topics (e.g., anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry) and revisits them in increasing complexity as clinical medicine and pharmacology are introduced.

Year 1: Clinical Sciences

• The first year consists of 56 credit hours of coursework, delivered in three semesters from September - July
• Focuses on adult medicine, pediatrics, surgery, psychiatry, and emergency medicine.
• Students typically spend upwards of 35+ hours a week in lectures, labs, and case-based tutorials

Year 2: Clerkship

• The second year includes 30 credit hours (48 weeks) of core clinical rotations
• Students complete various core clinical rotations across diverse environments, including hospital-based roles, specialty practices, and rural or northern First Nations communities.

Clinical Placement Locations

• Major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Max Rady College of Medicine (such as the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg).
• 25% of clinical rotations in rural medicine

Capstone Project

During the second year of the program, students must complete a Capstone Project to graduate.

Manitoba MPAS Admission Requirements

Status

Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada

Undergraduate Study

A four-year Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a health sciences field, from a college or university recognized by the University of Manitoba.

Cumulative GPA (cGPA)

• Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last two full years (60 credit hours) of study.
• A competitive GPA is typically 3.5.

Coursework

• Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry (minimum of 3 credit hours each) are required
• Microbiology and Psychology are considered asset courses.
