Canadian PA Admissions Requirements

Canadian Physician Assistant Program Admission Requirements

There are 3 PA programs in Canada. Each PA Program differs in terms of what they want submitted (e.g. transcripts, letters of reference), pre-requisite courses, GPA, supplementary application format and even the format of the Multi-Mini Interview.

Please note: There are NO required written tests (e.g. GRE, MCAT, etc.), nor will those test scores be considered for the programs.

The most common questions we get in our Canadian Pre-PA Student Networking Group often have to do with, “I have a GPA of X, is this good enough to get in? What courses do you recommend taking? Do I need health care experience to apply to the PA Programs in Canada?”

September 2020 Intake Deadlines

The three Canadian Physician Assistant schools all start in September, and set their deadlines for September start in January/February of the year.  Here are samples of the deadlines from this past admissions cycle:

What are the admission requirements of Canadian PA schools?

Each school is slightly different depending on the school and the year. Always check the PA program websites for the most up to date information

University of Manitoba Master of Physician Assistant Studies

  • Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • Master’s of PA Studies (MPAS)
  • ~2 year program / 96 weeks of medical education:
    • 1st year: Late August to July
    • 2nd year: 13 months of clinical rotations in Manitoba, with 1/4 of clinical education in rural environments
  • MPAS takes 15 students each year

Admission Requirements: 

  • Canadian citizen or Permanent resident of Canada
  • Minimum 4 year Bachelor’s degree from recognized colleges and universities
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA out of 4.5.
  • 3 letters of recommendations (one must be a current/recent employer, supervisor, student advisor or professor)
  • Required Courses: Human Anatomy, Human Physiology and Biochemistry.
  • Helpful courses: Microbiology and Psychology

Attributes of Competitive Applicants: 

From their MPAS Application Bulletin:

  • Adjusted Cumulative GPA 3.5/4.5
  • Submit a “Statement of Intent” that answers 4 questions (see the MPAS Application Bulletin for four questions).
  • Achieving minimum grade B in Biochemistry, Human Anatomy and Human Physiology
  • Complete all aspects of MPAS Supplementary Application
  • Submit all supporting materials (letters or references, transcripts, police check)

Interview Format: 

  • Multi-Mini Interview (MMI)
  • Written Station (hand-written)
  • Panel Interview

University of Manitoba Application Deadlines:

  • January: Submission of ALL documentation including online application through Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS), Radius Portal
  • Late February: MMI Interview date released
  • Mid-March: Invites to MMI sent out
  • April 15: MMI Interview takes place
  • May: Acceptances sent out.
  • September: Successful Applicants begin PA School

McMaster University PA Education Program

McMaster PAEP Info

  • Hamilton, Ontario
  • Bachelors of Health Sciences in PA Studies (BHSc PA)
  • ~2 year program
    • 1st year: September to August
    • 2nd year: 48 weeks of supervised clinical placements
  • 24 applicants accepted applicants

Admission Requirements: 

  • Canadian citizen or Permanent resident of Canada
  • Minimum 2 years of undergraduate university to apply
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA (OMSAS 4.0 scale)
  • No specific course requirements, no letters of reference, no written tests.

Supplementary Application: 

  • Approximately mid February after you have registered for OUAC
  • Online supplementary application completed through Kira Talent
  • Both written and video component

Interview Format: 

McMaster University PAEP Timeline: 

  • February 1: Submit OUAC Form 105 and all transcripts
  • February 21: Access to supplementary application released
  • April 4: Invitations for MMI Interview sent out
  • Early May: Multi-Mini Interviews take place
  • mid May: Offers of acceptance sent
  • September: Successful applicants begin PA school.

Consortium of PA Education

University of Toronto, Michener Institute of Applied Health Sciences, and Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

PA Consortium Info:

  • Toronto, Ontario
  • Distance and distributed education program, with majority of program delivered online
  • Bachelor of Sciences in PA Studies (BScPA) from University of Toronto
  • ~2 year program
    • 1st year (3 semesters): September to August, 15 courses total, 120 hours of longitudinal clinical experience, 4 mandatory residential blocks
    • 2nd year (3 semesters): 40 weeks of supervised direct clinical contact in rural and urban settings. Half of the placements in northern Ontario, other half of placements in southern Ontario.

Admission Requirements: 

  • Canadian citizen or Permanent resident of Canada
  • Minimum ~2 years undergraduate university (10 full year courses, 20 half year courses, or 4 semesters full time undergraduate study form recognized university)
  • Minimum 2.7 GPA (OMSAS 4.0 scale)
  • Minimum 910 health care experience hours (can be paid, as part of clinical placements or voluntary)
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency
  • Written Supplementary Application

Preferred Admission Criteria

  • One full course equivalent (two semesters, or one full year course) of: Human Anatomy, Chemistry, and Physiology
  • Health care experience that is within the last 5 years
  • Direct hands on patient care experience, paid position as a health care provider
  • Current resident of Ontario
  • Residents of northern or rural community

Supplementary Application: 

  • Supplementary application is completed online through OUAC
  • PDF version of the application is available on the website, with questions for you to answer
